The formula
Throughput Rate = Good Units Produced ÷ Time (and its inverse, cycle pace: minutes per unit)
“Good” is the operative word — scrap and rework inflate activity, not throughput. Count what ships.

The bottleneck rule
A process’s throughput equals its slowest step’s throughput — nothing else matters. If machining does 90/hour, assembly 60 and packing 75, the line makes 60, and every improvement anywhere except assembly is decoration. That’s the core of constraint thinking: find the bottleneck, feed it, fix it, repeat. Throughput then flows straight into money: it drives unit product cost (fixed overhead per unit falls as true throughput rises) and sets the volume reality behind your break-even — a break-even above your bottleneck’s capacity isn’t a target, it’s a redesign notice.

What is the throughput formula? Good units produced ÷ time. Express it per hour or per day, and invert it for cycle pace (minutes per unit).
What’s the difference between throughput and capacity? Capacity is the maximum possible rate; throughput is the achieved rate. The gap between them is downtime, defects and imbalance.
Why count only good units? Defective units consume time without creating sellable output — counting them flatters the rate while hiding the waste.
